How can I get JavaScript to work with validating forms?

I have forms/questions with red asterisk fields on my website. I want to know how I can prevent the users from leaving it blank when the user press the submit button. Also, I want to know how I can post the answers from the user on the database or perhaps be sent to my email. Thanks in advance!
