Hard drive not showing up in my computer?

i see it in device manager but it says that i have to initialize it and i cant initialize it because it says "disk is write protected" i wanted to know how i can fix this. if possible fix it without formatting because it has a lot of important data in it, but if it cant be helped. also it is a WD elements external HDD 2TB
