HDD not being recognized by and windows computers?

I have a WD passport portable hard drive, I hooked it up to my computer (running windows 7) and it doesn't appear on the computer, when I go into disk management, the drive appears but there are no options other than help when I right click on it. I tried it on windows XP and it has the same problem. It works on my other computer which is running ubuntu, so I formatted it into NTFS and it still doesn't work. Can anyone tell me how I can get this working on my windows computer?
