How simple can recovering videos and pictures from my external harddive be?

I have a wd passport that dropped from my desk and landed on the carpet. i cant acess my data. it says that it cant be read and needs to be formatted. I hear its expensive, Just wondering if there is a simpler way to recover data from the minimal damage it got.
